The first hour
From the terminal the car reaches the motorway within minutes. The slow part of other Bangkok routes, the ring of the city, is not on this one. The first sections have toll booths, and the driver pays them from the fare.
A landing in the early afternoon is the case where the first hour is easy; an arrival at 17:00 meets the evening traffic near the airport.
The stretch to the coast
Beyond Chon Buri the road is flat and straight, with factories and fruit stalls beside it. Trucks are the main slowdown. The route then runs on Highway 3 through Rayong and Chanthaburi, where fuel stations have shops and restaurants.
Suvarnabhumi to the Laem Ngop pier is 320 km and 3 h 50 min. The ferry wait, the crossing and the island road come after the pier.
The ferry
The ferry to Koh Chang leaves from the Ao Thammachat pier and takes about 30 minutes. The ferry is not included in the price: plus ferry tickets, about 80 THB per person. Boats run through the day and stop in the early evening, so a flight that clears the terminal by about 14:00 makes a crossing the same day.
A later arrival is better booked to the Laem Ngop pier, with a night near the mainland.
Choosing the time
A pick-up at 09:00 reaches the island in the afternoon. Friday evening and the start of a long weekend are the slow times near the airport. The fare is fixed, so the road conditions do not touch it; see the price page.
