Don Mueang to Laem Ngop is 4 h 40 min, the longest of the airport routes to the pier. Ferries stop in the early evening, so a flight that clears the terminal by about 13:30 makes a crossing the same day. Later than that, plan a night near the mainland pier and cross in the morning.
The first part of the road crosses the north of Bangkok, and the weekday rush adds to it. The same road after 21:00 is much quicker.
Pier or island
The pier costs 3,599 THB for a Standard Sedan, 400 THB less than the 3,999 THB to a hotel on Koh Chang. If the car should cross the water with you, book Don Mueang to Koh Chang. If you are going to Koh Mak, the pier is the right booking.
