Crossing Bangkok
Don Mueang lies in the north of the city, and the first hour is the slowest part of the trip. The car has to reach the eastern motorway through the urban ring, and weekday mornings and Friday evenings are the worst times. After 21:00 the same road is much quicker.
A flight that lands at midnight has the road almost to itself.
Chon Buri to Chanthaburi
Once on the eastern motorway the road is flat and straight, with factories and fruit stalls beside it. Highway 3 continues through Rayong and Chanthaburi to the coast. The driver pays the tolls from the fare, and fuel stations with shops and restaurants are spaced along the way.
Don Mueang to the Laem Ngop pier is 350 km and 4 h 40 min. The ferry wait, the crossing and the island road come after the pier.
The ferry
The ferry leaves from the Ao Thammachat pier and takes about 30 minutes. The ferry is not included in the price: plus ferry tickets, about 80 THB per person. Boats run through the day and stop in the early evening, so a flight that clears the terminal by about 13:30 makes the crossing the same day.
An evening arrival is better booked to the Laem Ngop pier, with a night near the mainland.
