How to get from Bangkok to Laem Ngop pier

There are four ways to reach the Laem Ngop pier from Bangkok: a private taxi, a bus to Trat with a songthaew, a minivan or your own car. The taxi costs 3,599 THB per car for the 320 km and takes about 4 h 20 min.

Private taxi

You book a time and a hotel address. The driver arrives at the door, carries the bags and leaves you at the pier of your ferry or boat. The amount does not change on the road: it is per car and covers tolls and fuel.

The Toyota Innova at 3,799 THB takes four with their luggage, and the Hyundai H1 at 5,899 THB takes six.

Bus and songthaew

Buses to Trat leave from the Eastern bus terminal at Ekkamai. They stop in Trat town, so the last 20 km to the pier are by songthaew or minivan. Each change is a wait with the bags.

The bus is the cheapest option for one traveller with a day pack. Check the current timetable at the terminal.

Minivan and own car

Minivans to the pier leave when full and stop at set points, not at your hotel. Your own car works as well, and the pier has space to leave it, though the drive back to Bangkok is the same long road again.

A car left at the pier also needs a plan for the days you are away.

Which to choose

A family, a couple with suitcases or a group takes the taxi, because the price is shared and the trip is door to door. If your boat to Koh Mak leaves at a fixed time, the taxi is the safer choice, since a bus leaves on its own timetable.

Prices are on the price page. You pay the driver in cash, or by Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, transfer by QR code or bank transfer to a Thai account if you prefer.

Beyond the pier

The crossing to Koh Chang is about 30 minutes. The ferry is not included in the price: plus ferry tickets, about 80 THB per person. If the car should cross with you, book Bangkok to Koh Chang instead of the pier.

Questions and answers

Is there a train to Laem Ngop?

No. The railway does not reach Trat or Laem Ngop; the trip is by road.

Where do buses from Bangkok stop?

In Trat town. To reach the pier from there you take a songthaew or a minivan.

Is the taxi worth it for one person?

Seldom, if the price is all that matters. The car pays off with company, with heavy luggage or with a late arrival.

Can I book the way back from the pier?

Yes. See Laem Ngop to Bangkok.

Do I buy the ferry ticket in advance?

No. You buy it at the pier.
