Out of the city

From a central hotel the car joins an expressway and then the eastern motorway, with its toll booths and the turn-offs for the airports. The ring of the city is where time is lost: a pick-up at 06:30 reaches the open road in 20 minutes, while the same pick-up at 08:30 may need an hour.

A hotel in the east of the city, near Bang Na or Ramkhamhaeng, is on the road already.

Chon Buri, Rayong and Chanthaburi

Beyond the city the motorway crosses flat country with industrial estates on both sides, and trucks are most numerous here. The car passes Chon Buri and Rayong and continues on Highway 3 to Chanthaburi, famous for its fruit markets and gem trade. The driver pays the tolls from the fare.

Fuel stations with shops and restaurants are spaced along the way, and a stop of ten minutes costs nothing.

Trat, Laem Ngop and the ferry

After Chanthaburi the road reaches Trat province and turns off to the coast at Laem Ngop, where the Ao Thammachat pier is. Bangkok to the pier is 320 km and 4 h 20 min. The ferry takes about 30 minutes, and then the island road follows the west coast to your hotel. The ferry is not included in the price: plus ferry tickets, about 80 THB per person.

When to leave

The best departure from Bangkok is between 05:30 and 07:00, or after 09:30. Friday afternoon is the heaviest time out of the city, and the Sunday evening return is the heaviest time in. Ferries run through the day and stop in the early evening, so a late start on a Friday can cost you the last boat.
