How to get from Bangkok to Koh Chang

There are four ways to reach Koh Chang from Bangkok: a private taxi, a public bus with a songthaew, a minivan or your own car. The taxi costs 3,899 THB per car for the 350 km and takes about 5 h 16 min. The others cost less per person and take longer.

Private taxi

You book a time and a hotel address. The driver arrives at the door, carries the bags, drives onto the ferry with you and leaves you at your resort on the island. The price is fixed per car. With three or four people the fare is shared, and the changes are gone.

The Toyota Innova at 4,099 THB takes four with their luggage, and the Hyundai H1 at 6,099 THB takes six.

Bus and songthaew

Buses to Trat leave from the Eastern bus terminal at Ekkamai and from other terminals in the city. They stop in Trat town, so the last 20 km to the ferry pier are by songthaew or minivan, and then the island songthaew takes you along the coast road. Each change is a wait with the bags.

The bus is the cheapest option for a single traveller with a day pack. Check the current timetable at the terminal, because departures and fares change.

Minivan and your own car

Minivans from Bangkok to the ferry pier or straight to the island run from the tourist areas, and they leave when full. A seat in a minivan is tighter than a seat in a car, and the pick-up point is not the hotel. Your own car works too: the ferry takes cars, and you pay for the crossing at the pier.

The drive is long, so the return with the same car after a tiring holiday week is the part people forget.

Which to choose

One person with a small bag can go by bus. A family, a couple with suitcases or a group takes the taxi, because the price is shared and the trip is door to door. A person who wants the last ferry of the day takes the taxi as well, since a bus leaves on its own timetable.

Details and prices are on the price page. You pay the driver in cash, or by Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, transfer by QR code or bank transfer to a Thai account if you prefer.

After the road

The ferry crosses to Koh Chang in about 30 minutes. The ferry is not included in the price: plus ferry tickets, about 80 THB per person. The service page Taxi from Bangkok to Koh Chang covers the crossing step by step.

Questions and answers

Is there a direct train?

No. There is no train to Trat or Laem Ngop, so the choice is the road.

Where do buses from Bangkok stop?

In Trat town. The last part to the ferry pier is by songthaew or minivan.

Is the taxi worth it for one person?

Not on price alone, because one traveller pays for the whole car. With two or more the fare is shared and the trip runs from door to door.

Can I take a taxi back to Bangkok as well?

Yes. See Koh Chang to Bangkok.

Do I buy the ferry ticket in advance?

No. You buy it at the pier. The driver handles the queue for the car.
